Tuesday, December 19, 2023, 10 a.m. on the Zwieselalm valley run in Gosau: A 59-year-old skier from Upper Austria can no longer avoid a collision. She collides with a woman who is currently only known to have been wearing dark blue and red ski gear. Because this woman just keeps driving after the collision.
On this day, Lisa Löffler and Sabrina Lindenthaler, both registered nurses at the University Hospital in Salzburg, are also out and about in the Dachstein-West ski area – independently of each other. And they both stop at the seriously injured woman.
“We didn’t know each other before, but we both stopped at the same time because we saw a woman lying on the edge of the piste,” says Lindenthaler.
Praise from the Alpine police
The woman has seriously injured her leg and needs urgent medical attention. “We then secured the scene of the accident and spoke to the woman. The piste rescue team had already been informed. We covered the woman, kept her warm and calmed her down,” says Löffler.
It quickly becomes clear that transport to the valley by Akia is not possible, so a helicopter from Martin Air Rescue is requested. The lady can be stabilized and taken to the hospital in Schwarzach.
The Alpine police in the Gmunden district thanked Lisa and Sabrina in a letter: “The patient was treated like a well-rehearsed team by the emergency doctor and the two qualified nurses. That was exemplary first aid. Unfortunately, it is now normal that no one stops when such incidents occur , but everyone just keeps driving.”
For Löffler and Lindenthaler, their commitment was “natural”. “In principle, we would have stopped and asked if we could help. Even if we hadn’t learned that,” says Löffler.
Lisa Löffler works in the advanced nursing service at the University Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics.
After several years at the oncology ward at the University Hospital for Internal Medicine, Sabrina Lindenthaler moved to the central outpatient clinic at the University Hospital Campus Christian-Doppler-Klinik a few days ago. Their paths will now cross more often in the future. (against)
