Baby showers have been around for a long time, but now a new trend is coming from America – the so-called gender reveal party. Translated, this means gender reveal party and it means exactly that. Expectant parents find out the gender of their child with their friends and family. The whole thing is usually filmed and shared on social networks. The proclamation can take place in many ways: for example, by popping a balloon and releasing pink or light blue glitter. A cake with white icing – and correspondingly colored filling – is also popular.

Decadent excesses
These parties are now a real internet phenomenon, writes “Stern”. It was “invented” by US blogger Jenna Karvunidis, who first announced in 2008 that she was expecting a girl with a “gender reveal cake”, a cake with pink filling. Since then, the trend has been growing, not least because stars and influencers are perfecting these productions. The party supplies trade has also long since reacted and brought corresponding decorations onto the market.

But there is also criticism, for example because of the sometimes decadent excesses. A couple spent almost $100,000 to light up the world’s tallest structure, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, with a laser show for their baby celebration. Above all, it is the gender stereotypes that many parents today actually want to avoid – it is not for nothing that beige was recently one of the most popular colors in children’s rooms.
Even Jenna Karvunidis, who had the idea back then, now thinks the parties are wrong. She just wanted to “celebrate her pregnancy, capture the moment of happiness,” as she told the Guardian. Then she noticed how backwards the celebrations were in dealing with gender stereotypes. That made her think differently.
