The renaming is intended to draw attention to the expanded research focus, explains institute director Ernst Langthaler: “When you deal with economics as a historian, it’s about relationships not only between people, but also between people and nature.”
“People in the past changed their environment by cultivating land, extracting mineral resources, using fossil energy or practicing nature conservation,” explains the scientist: “Understanding today’s Anthropocene also means understanding its long prehistory. That’s why we’re expanding ours previous area of work in environmental history.” A lot can be learned from the past for future changes. Environmental history deals with historical changes in the relationship between people and the environment. The researchers look at factors such as climate, energy, land use and nutrition.
Current project “SoyChange”
The newly renamed institute has been working on the topic for several years now – and has achieved widespread international recognition. The first edition of the doctoral conference “Economic, Social and Environmental History” took place in 2018 and has been moving from one university to the next ever since.
The institute’s employees are currently working on the project “Soy and Agro-Food Change”, or “SoyChange” for short, on the socio-ecological transformation of agriculture and nutrition over the past 150 years.
