The overnight stay balance of the Wels Region Tourism Association for 2023 shows a whopping increase of eleven percent compared to 2022: the 77 member companies recorded 362,000 overnight stays. “This shows that the tourism association is successfully uniting the communities of Wels, Sattledt and Kremsmünster with the 15 voluntary member companies in the surrounding communities,” says chairman of the supervisory board Helmut Platzer.
150,000 guests visited the region last year – 46 percent of them were Austrians, 43 percent Germans, the rest were divided between 43 countries of origin. The number of beds has also increased – by 400 to a total of 3,300. A record was set in June: with 29,803 overnight stays in the region, it was the strongest month ever for accommodation providers.
The development varied in the individual municipalities: Wels recorded an increase of 11 percent with 228,043 overnight stays. Sattledt increased by three percent to 32,989 overnight stays. Kremsmünster alone recorded a decline of 14 percent with 20,390 overnight stays, but 2022 was a record year.
In Wels, economic tourists make up around three quarters of the guests, says City Councilor for Economics and Tourism Martin Oberndorfer (VP): “We will therefore continue to strengthen our profile in this area. But we also want to improve in the leisure area, especially in the cycling area There will be more routes around Wels in the coming years.”
Mayor Andreas Rabl (FP) sees a success for the strategy of merging city marketing and the tourism association: “We have managed to use synergies so that the city and the surrounding area benefit.” After the forced Corona break, the city will make greater efforts to bring major concerts to Wels from this year. The 2027 State Garden Show, for which the city has applied, is also expected to bring an increase in visitors. “Green meetings are becoming increasingly important, and with Wels’ location and connection to public transport we have optimal conditions,” says the city boss.
Merger with Vitalwelt?
Another topic that was discussed during the presentation of the balance sheet was the change in the Upper Austrian Tourism Act: As reported, the current 19 tourism associations in the state must grow together to six to seven by 2025. Wels can remain alone as a statutory city, but is in talks with Vitalwelt and Bad Hall, says city marketing and tourism region manager Peter Jungreithmair: “We are already much further along in development than the rest of Upper Austria. We therefore have a lot of expertise offer.”
