They seem like relics from a bygone era: there are still a few telephone booths in the Linz city area, but they are hardly ever used anymore. Smartphones have long since overtaken them.
With a recently launched pilot project by the post office, old telephone boxes at selected locations are now being given new life.
Self-service devices will be installed in their place; parcels and registered or large-format letters can be picked up from these postal stations around the clock, seven days a week. Pre-franked packages with a return label or parcel stamp can also be posted there.
More on the subject: The silent end of the telephone booth
“We want to get even closer to the population,” said Walter Oblin, designated general director of Post AG, today at a press event on Anastasius-Grün-Straße. The post office there is the first not only in Linz but in Austria to replace an old telephone booth.
New and more compact models
This represents a new, smaller and more compact generation of self-service devices. This means that the supply of individual districts or larger residential complexes can be optimally covered, said Oblin. Experience shows that these self-service solutions are very well received by customers.
Over the next two years, the postal service plans to build around 100 such stations in the Linz area. However, these are only partially being built instead of telephone booths; we are currently examining where this makes sense. This form of reuse is made possible through a cooperation between the post office and A1 Telekom Austria. According to Oblin, the investment volume for Linz is in the seven-figure range. No branch closures are planned.
“Creative solution”
In addition to the post office on Anastasius-Grün-Straße, there are five other new self-service locations, which were built in cooperation with the GWG. However, no old telephone booth locations were used for this at Schreberstrasse 2, Neubauzeile 73, Auwiesenstrasse 118, Ontlstrasse 7 and Rudolfstrasse 8-12. There are now a total of 16 free-standing post offices in Linz.
For Mayor Klaus Luger (SP), the pick-up stations represent a creative and customer-friendly solution that responds to the changing social conditions. Traditional collection from post offices has become obsolete, not least because of online trading. The self-service devices take into account customers’ desire for flexibility when picking up items.
The question remains what happens to the dismantled telephone booths. There are a lot of interested parties here, including collectors and nostalgics, but some of them would be disposed of or recycled due to their condition, said Oblin.
