Elections in Palestine may take place a month after Israel agrees to vote in Jerusalem. The Ambassador of Palestine to Russia Abdel Hafiz Nofal stated this in an interview with Izvestia.
“We continue to work on this issue, of course,” the ambassador assured. – We ask Russia, the EU and the UN to convince Israel to let us hold our elections in East Jerusalem. If this agreement is reached, we are ready to hold elections as early as next month. “
At the same time, the diplomat clarified: the main thing is that the elections should be held in Jerusalem, “because East Jerusalem is the capital of the Palestinian state.”
“If we accept parliamentary and presidential elections without Jerusalem, it will mean that we have accepted the deal [экс-президента США Дональда] Trump and recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, ”the ambassador explained.
Presidential and parliamentary elections in the state were to be held on May 22 and July 31 this year for the first time since 2006. However, on April 30, President Mahmoud Abbas said that the vote would be postponed because of Israel’s position: he did not allow Palestinian elections to be held in East Jerusalem.
