On Friday, the FPÖ called on Austrian farmers to protest against the government based on the German model. Ultimately, there were significantly fewer tractors than police vehicles to be seen on Ballhausplatz in front of the Chancellery – eleven in total. Surrounded by hundreds of demonstrators, including critics of the measures and conspiracy theorists, as they were often found at the Corona marches. “Unfortunately” they were only able to get a politician to speak, said one of the “non-partisan” organizers of the demo under the motto “Future of our agriculture – farmers are not servants!”. This was Peter Schmielechner, FP agriculture spokesman in the National Council. His party had previously called for a “trip to Vienna”, for which there were accusations, particularly from the VP Farmers’ Association, of exploiting farmers for party purposes.
On the microphone, Schmielechner then railed against the EU, which he accused of wanting to “secretly” decide on the Mercosur free trade agreement. The FP politician also warned against “laboratory meat” and called for an end to the “price explosion”.

In Germany, farmers nationwide demonstrated with thousands of tractors against the end of diesel benefits for agriculture. They were supported several times by the right-wing populist AfD.
“Unprecedented death of farmers”
This situation does not exist in Austria. Schmiedlechner accused the ÖVP of having done nothing in 37 years in the Ministry of Agriculture to prevent “the fact that we have an unprecedented number of farmers dying off.”

Hannes Brejcha, organizer of many Corona demos, used the podium to rail against “the compulsory vaccination” or the “secret WHO director Bill Gates”.
The chairman of the SP farmers, Michael Schwarzlmüller, showed understanding for the discontent due to the great price pressure in agriculture. At the same time, he warned of the danger that such demonstrations would be “infiltrated by right-wing extremists.” Neos MP Helmut Brandstätter saw no reason for the protest. Because the farmers “do a very good job and are treated very well in Austria”.
