“The time will come when a woman will be the state fire brigade commander at the top of our organization,” said the fire brigade president Robert Mayer confident on the occasion of the event “Fire and Flame – Ambassadors of the Upper Austrian Fire Brigades”. 150 guests – most of them firefighters – accepted the invitation from the state councilor Michaela Langer-Weninger and him on the MS Linzerin. There the results from the Upper Austrian Working Committee on Voluntariness and Voluntary Work were presented. The fire department management will present a discussion on how to further increase the proportion of women. Because there is actually still enough room for improvement. There are still fire departments that have no women in their ranks. That should change.
Those women who have already secured or even fought for their place in the comradeship are now sent out as ambassadors. “We still have a lot of potential and of course we want to increase the proportion of women. That’s why it’s so important that the firefighters serve as role models. We have a huge influx of girls among our youth. Thanks to these role models, we should also be able to transition into active duty to make it easier,” says Langer-Weninger.
One of these ambassadors is Anita Stummer, a true pioneer and second deputy commander of the FF Enns: “I can only invite everyone, whether girl or boy, to come to the fire department. It’s a great camaraderie and you can get involved in many areas.” But also Nicole Huemerwho moved from Germany to Upper Austria with excellent training and was not immediately accepted into the local fire department with enthusiasm: “It was only when my children were of that age that they were ready to take me in. Since then, I have been enthusiastically involved again.”
This was also reported Simone Mayrhofer, who looks after the youth group in the FF Niederthalheim. The state governor was also proud of “his” firefighters Thomas Stelzer – no wonder, since the proportion of women in the state is higher than the national average: “Organizations like the fire department make an invaluable contribution to society.” In this respect, one can only definitely welcome it if the social relationship between the sexes is also reflected in the fire department.
The soccer pioneer revealed how to motivate yourself as a team Victoria Schnaderbeck: “You need visions that you convert into goals and a clear distribution of roles. Everyone has to be ready to accept their role. It’s important that you win as a team, but also lose as a team,” she said. “Female role models are invaluable. I didn’t have that at the beginning. When I saw the first woman play football, it had a very positive influence on me.”
