Negotiators from EU countries and the European Parliament agreed on this on Thursday.
The production of these so-called F-gases, which are used in refrigerators and air conditioning systems, should be reduced to a minimum from 2036, according to a statement from the EU countries. In addition, according to the information, there are also new regulations for ozone-depleting substances.
According to the statement, fluorinated gases account for around 2.5 percent of the EU’s greenhouse gas emissions. They are found, among other things, in heat pumps, fire retardants and foams. As reported, there have recently been discussions about conventional refrigerants in heat pumps. These should be gradually converted to natural refrigerants.
Additional reductions in F-gas emissions are needed to contribute to the EU’s climate targets and to comply with the amendment to the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer, Parliament said. The agreement is based on a legislative proposal from the EU Commission. According to the Brussels authority on Thursday, the regulations now agreed will prevent further emissions of almost 500 million tonnes by 2050.
The new regulations still need to be approved by the states and parliament.
