The first case occurred on the afternoon of January 19th. A young man had a 58-year-old taxi driver drive him from Linz to Wels and back again. At his destination, he simply jumped out of the car and ran away without paying the taxi bill (which was a three-digit amount). Eventually the perpetrator was identified; he was a well-known man from Linz.

Second taxi fraud on the Linz-Wels route

The following night on January 20th there was a second taxi fraud, this time in Wels. A previously unknown man was driven from Linz to Wels around 1:40 a.m. When he arrived at his destination, the perpetrator deceived the 55-year-old taxi driver from the Linz-Land district by pretending that he did not have any cash with him. The perpetrator got out of the taxi and led the taxi driver to believe that he would return shortly afterwards, but he did not.

Whether the perpetrator was the same in both cases is the subject of ongoing investigations.
