It’s like discussing the sex of angels

The mayor of Montevideo and presidential candidate for the Wide Front (FA), Carolina Cosse, referred to the controversy over the historical accuracy of the celebration for the 300 years of the Uruguayan capital and assured that “it is like discussing the sex of angels.”

cosse responded in this way to criticism from leaders of the National Party, with the senator Jorge Gandini at the head, who consider that the foundation of Montevideo It was in 1726 and not in 1724, when this process began, as they warn from the IM.

When defending her position, the FA candidate pointed out her dialogue with experts. “They advised us that it was a founding process in 1724 and perhaps 1723 could be marked as the beginning,” she justified her decision.

In any case, he highlighted that the city “has a very rich history” and noted: “The construction of buildings is never finished.” Montevideo, that does not stop growing, that does not stop changing.”

Trying to avoid the controversy, cosse He added that this discussion “truly does not take away even the slightest shine, especially the importance of the city turning 300 years old” and concluded: “It is a year that should invite us to reflect, to the construction of history.” and project Montevideo for the 300 years to come.”

Criticism of Cosse for the chosen date

There were several leaders who were critical of the date chosen by cosse for the celebration. For example, the deputy of Colorado Party (PC), Felipe Schipani, made a request for reports to the Montevideo Municipality (IM).

“The official date established by the Montevideo Board of Directors, chaired by Juan Pedro Fabini in the year 1926, it was December 24, 1726. The choice of the year 1724 as the founding date of the city is striking,” Schipani said in a letter released by Telemundo.

Even the Minister of Labor and Social Security, Pablo Mieres, was the protagonist of a crossroads in the last few hours due to data on employment, when the Broad Front leader said that “the percentage of employment of those under 25 years of age is at 60 something when at a general level it is at 6%.”

Mieres maintained that Cosse “demonstrated great ignorance about the labor reality of our country, saying that the informality was high (it was reduced in these years compared to when the FA governed) and giving wrong numbers about the situation of youth work” and ironically: “It is clear that the celebration of the 298 years of Montevideo has her distracted.”
