It is a turning point that is emerging in Munich. And it symbolizes the change towards electromobility: The Bavarian premium manufacturer BMW is converting its main factory in the Bavarian capital so that from 2027 only electric cars will roll off the production lines there. After 75 years, the era of automobiles with combustion engines from Munich will end. And it will be the beginning of a new era.
The traditional main plant will thus be the first BMW location in the existing production network in which exclusively electric vehicles are built. “The Munich plant is an excellent example of our adaptability,” said Production Director Milan Nedeljkovic in Munich at an appointment with international journalists. Incidentally, the conversion is taking place in parallel with the current production of around 1,000 cars per day.
“In 2023 alone, six fully electric models were launched, and at the same time we achieved a production record. Our production network shows that we are delivering and shaping the future at the same time,” says Nedeljkovic.
In order to create the necessary space in the limited area of the factory in the middle of Munich, the traditional engine production was relocated to the locations Hams Hall in Great Britain and Steyr in Austria after around 70 years in the main factory (the OÖN have reported).
The new “New Class”
The term “New Class” has a special meaning for BMW. The introduction of this generation of vehicles was a milestone in the 1960s – and has made a decisive contribution to Bavaria being where it is. The new “New Class” is intended to open a completely new chapter.
The BMW Vision Neue Klasse is a prototype of a fully electric, sporty sedan with significantly higher efficiency (more range, faster charging, lower consumption) than current electric cars. The interior is completely redesigned – for example with a huge head-up display across the entire width of the windshield.
