Federal spokesman Werner Kogler introduced the “candidate for top candidacy” at a press conference on Monday. No name has been given yet, but it is probably the 23-year-old climate activist Lena Schilling.
Both Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler and Justice Minister Alma Zadić had previously canceled the EU elections on June 9th. The National Council member Michel Reimon backed down, and his parliamentary group colleague Ewa Ernst-Dziedzic didn’t want to either. Schilling herself didn’t make a decision for a long time; she repeatedly expressed her disappointment with the Greens. Other factions were also interested in the activist who became known in the resistance against the Lobau motorway tunnel.
The application deadline for the Green Party’s top EU candidacy is currently expiring. The matter will then be finally decided at a federal congress on February 24th in Graz, which was originally supposed to have taken place before Christmas. It can be assumed that Kogler will first obtain the approval of the Extended Federal Executive Board, in which the state organizations are also represented.
In the 2019 EU elections, Kogler himself ran as the top candidate, but then did not accept the mandate. The prominent runner-up on the list was the restaurateur and farmer Sarah Wiener, who is no longer running this time. The Greens achieved 14.08 percent of the vote and thus made a brilliant comeback after being kicked out of the National Council in Austria in 2017.
The SPÖ, ÖVP and FPÖ have already chosen their top candidates for the 2024 EU elections; they are entering the race with Andreas Schieder, Reinhold Lopatka and Harald Vilimsky, respectively. National Council member Helmut Brandstätter has the best prospects for this at NEOS. The Liberal list will be decided at the end of January.
