The native Roman of Swiss descent died on Thursday night in her apartment in Rome, the relatives said. Wertmüller is best known for her film “Seven Beauties” from 1975, which was nominated for four Oscars. As the first woman ever, she was in the running for the director’s Oscar.
Her other films include “Mimi, hurt in his honor”, “Love and Anarchy”, “Blood feud” and “Camorra”. In 2019, Wertmüller received an honorary Oscar. The little woman with short white hair was known, among other things, for the breathtaking titles of her films, which were often shortened internationally. “Carried away by an unusual fate in the azure blue sea in August” from 1974 is an example. With “Mimi – hurt in his honor”, Wertmüller achieved his breakthrough in 1971. With “In einer Regennacht” (1977) and above all “Camorra” (1985) she set tragic-comic accents.
In her successful films, Wertmüller relied primarily on the talent of the award-winning actor Giancarlo Giannini. For example in “Love and Anarchy”, the turbulent story of a provincial anarchist who slept through an assassination attempt on the dictator Mussolini in a brothel in Rome. After the turn of the millennium, the director relied on Sophia Loren in several films, but could no longer build on earlier times. Her last work was on TV in 2008: “Mannaggia alla misera”. In 2010 she received the most important Italian film award “David di Donatello” – for her life’s work.
