The United States is spamming invitations to a “summit for democracy,” although the state itself is far from building a real democratic system, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday, December 8.
In her Telegram channel, she analyzed an article by the former director of the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), retired General Michael Hayden about the current situation in the States.
According to her, the general in the article lists the painful topics of American society associated with manifestations of police arbitrariness, the depravity of the penitentiary system, illegal migration and social inequality.
“What are the American authorities doing to improve the situation at home? Initiating discussions, conducting polls, implementing reforms? No. Instead, they are spamming all over the world invitations to a democratic master class – the “summit of democracies,” said a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman.
As Zakharova emphasized, in the article, the former military man refers to research by American think tanks and NGOs, in particular, the Washington-based Cato Institute and Freedom House. There, experts rated the freedom of American society 11 points lower than just 10 years ago (83 out of 100 instead of 94 out of 100).
In addition, according to the published material, polls by the Pew Research Center showed that 80% of Americans surveyed do not recognize the United States as a democratic country.
“Hayden believes that the root of the trouble is a deep division in American society. According to him, there is no consensus between Republicans and Democrats on a huge range of issues, from assessing the events of American history to attitudes towards political elites, ”a foreign ministry spokesman said.
Zakharova concluded that in such conditions it is “inappropriate” to represent the United States as the world leader in the defense of democracy.
Earlier, on December 1, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called the US initiative to convene a “Summit for Democracy” between parties. The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry stressed that Russia’s response to any attempts to interfere in the country’s affairs will always be tough.
The Summit for Democracy is scheduled for December 9-10. The United States invited 110 countries to it, excluding Russia and China.
