The fact that there are no cycle paths on either the West Bridge or the subsequent exit towards Unionstrasse is an “unacceptable and dangerous situation”. Cyclists who want to avoid these dangerous areas only have the alternative Untergaumberg underpass, where they have to push their bikes through.
“Whichever route cyclists choose to get from Waldeggstraße to Unionstraße, one thing remains the same: they have to be prepared for dangerous situations in traffic, obstacles or detours,” says club chairman Helge Langer.
Interim solution instead of waiting until 2034
Langer doesn’t want to wait until the new bridge is built as part of the final Westring stage and is calling for an interim solution. As reported, Asfinag is aiming for its completion in 2034. “Safe cycle paths are the key,” the Green politician advocated in a local council proposal on Thursday for transport officer Deputy Mayor Martin Hajart (VP) to lobby State Transport Councilor Günther Steinkellner (FP) for adaptations. Ultimately, the western bridge falls under the state’s responsibility.
