the left does not overcome its divisions and sinks in the polls

“No, I will not participate in a primary on the left,” said Jadot, referring to the proposal made the day before by the mayor of Paris.

The Communist Party and France Insoumise (FI, radical left) also rejected this “last chance proposal” by Hidalgo.

When the favorite themes of the right and extreme right – security, migration and traditional values - star in the pre-campaign, the polls give the left parties less than 10% of the intention to vote in the April presidential election, historically low levels.

The leftist Jean-Luc Mélenchon (FI) would achieve around 9%, followed by the environmentalist candidate (around 7%) and Hidalgo (5%). Together with the rest of the left-wing candidates with the least intention to vote, they would as a whole achieve around 25%.

The last left-wing leader was the socialist Francois Hollande (2012-2017), who then refused to run for re-election in a context of low levels of popularity.

Almost all of the polls give the current liberal president as the winner of the presidential election, Emmanuel Macron, who would face a candidate of the extreme right in the ballot –Marine Le Pen O Eric Zemmour– or to the candidate of the right-wing party Los Republicanos, Valerie Pécresse.
