When this young trend sport is shown on TV, it usually delivers spectacular images: ski cross. In 1998, the international ski association FIS added this discipline to the World Cup calendar. Four athletes simultaneously plunge into a course that is peppered with steep curves, jumps and waves. The two fastest drivers advance to the next round up to the final.
In man against man or woman against woman fights, physical contact, collisions and falls are the order of the day. Corresponding courage and skiing skills are definitely required. However, fun and excitement are also guaranteed for those who dare to embark on this adventure.

Next weekend, the Austrian Ski Association is offering the chance to get a taste of this trendy sport on the Höss in Hinterstoder. Andrea Limbacher, the 2015 ski cross world champion who was born in Bad Ischl and retired last year, familiarizes herself with the most important elements of this discipline and explains step by step what is important in ski cross.
The trial courses will take place on Saturday, January 27th and Sunday, January 28th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Funslope Hinterstoder. The number of participants is limited to 30.
Several skiers from the region have recently shown that ski cross can not only improve your skiing skills and be great fun. Johannes “Jonny” Rohrweck is the most successful in the World Cup. The 33-year-old from Großraminger, who once completed his first racing turns at the Ennstal Cup, is friends with Austria’s ski star Vincent Kriechmayr and has already celebrated two World Cup victories. The best result this season was a third place in December in Val Thorens in France. Having now taken part in four World Cups, eighth place was his top result.
Until two years ago, Thomas Mayrpeter from Steyr was also a professional in the ski cross circus. The former Super-G junior world champion and downhill junior runner-up in the Alpine world only switched to ski crossers in the 2018/19 season after serious injuries. An eighth place in the World Cup was his best result here.
Marcus Plank from the Steyr Ski Club is currently in action in the European Cup. This season, the 21-year-old from Haidershofen has already won an FIS race on the Reiteralm.
Registration: Children and young people aged twelve to 15 can register for the ski cross trial days online at: www.skiaustria.at
