A forestry worker who saw the forest for the trees

E. Dirngrabner

The photo on the party slip shows him in the middle of the forest with the fidget in his hand. At the same time, Erich Dirngrabner, the former mayor of Molln and former member of the state parliament, began his career as a central works council at the Federal Forests (ÖBf) at the SPÖ, of which he became the Kirchdorf district chairman in 1971. As the long-time chairman of the Mollner Pensioners’ Association, he was not only interested in appropriate pension increases every year, the former forest worker’s thoughts also grew beyond the tree line as a retiree. The senior publicly declared himself a supporter of the globalization-critical association “Attac,” which advocates for fair world trade, climate protection and against tax evasion, on its website.

Dirngrabner’s positions – not just as a member of the state parliament and trade unionist at the federal level – allowed him to be on a first-name basis with the highest political and business circles, such as with the former finance minister and industrialist Hannes Androsch. Dirngrabner particularly lent his ear to the “little people” who gathered in his consultation hours and whose concerns he intervened and sought a legally viable solution. In Molln, the national park center is a monument because he had already implemented it as a wooden structure at the time and had the trees cut down according to the moon in the month of Christmas.

The requiem for Dirngrabner, who died on January 19th at the age of 84, will take place on February 3rd at 10 a.m. in the Frauenstein pilgrimage church.
