On Tuesday morning something happened there in the Waidring/St. Ulrich am Pillersee the “strongest” quake to date with a magnitude of 3.8. In total, there have been around 60 measurable earthquakes in the region in January alone, 16 of which were felt by the population, said the GeoSphere Austria earthquake service. The Pillerseetal series of earthquakes also caused the Austrian average to rise.

20 earthquakes in January
So far this January, around 20 earthquakes have been felt nationwide. In an average January, however, around five noticeable earthquakes can be expected, according to the experts. The quake on Tuesday woke many people from their sleep, some fled outdoors and there were occasional reports of minor damage to buildings, such as fine cracks in the plaster. In international comparison and also in terms of strength, one still has to speak of a “mild earthquake,” emphasized Anton Vogelmann from the earthquake service. He expected the quakes in the region to last for “several days.”
Comparable series more than 100 years ago
Regarding the earthquakes in the easternmost region of the Kitzbühel district, on the border with Salzburg, there are also some interesting side aspects: The Pillerseetal region is actually one of the regions in the state that is at low risk from earthquakes. The last time a comparable series occurred was in 1921, when the earth shook repeatedly for five months. The strength was similar to the current quake over 100 years ago with a magnitude of up to 3.8.
Tyrol is one of the federal states with the most noticeable earthquakes in Austria every year. The Innsbruck area and Hall in Tirol particularly stand out. “The reason for this is the ongoing geological processes of the formation of the Alps,” explained seismologist Christiane Freudenthaler.
Several earthquakes had already occurred in the Waidring area last week. Strengths of 2.2 to 3.4 were measured. In some cases the quakes were perceived as thundering or rumbling from the underground.
