In the work of the awareness region, communities, memorial organizations and volunteers from the local communities of the former Mauthausen and Gusen concentration camps want to enable responsible handling of their historical heritage. The annual human rights symposium is the largest, but by far not the only, initiative in which these efforts find expression.
Every two years, the mayors of the communities of Mauthausen, Langenstein and St. Georgen an der Gusen take turns chairing the awareness region. Following the commitment of Mayor Aufreiter Christian, who was intensively involved in the participation process for the expansion and redesign of the Gusen concentration camp memorial and worked for the financial security of the awareness region, Mauthausen’s mayor Thomas Punkenhofer is now taking over the chairmanship on a rotating basis for two years. According to the statutes, the chairmanship then passes to the mayor of St. Georgen, Andreas Derntl.
“I look forward to continuing to work on the positive development in the region,” said Punkenhofer about his leadership role after the change in chairmanship. Above all, he wants to support the numerous activities of the memorial initiatives and further develop the awareness region projects that have already been initiated and the human rights symposium. In order for this to become possible, we still need people who are actively involved and who strengthen human rights in society. Punkenhofer: “My thanks go above all to these people and their commitment.”
