It is not Marco Odermatt, but Manuel Feller who is in the lead after the first run. The Tyrolean was a tenth of a second faster on the Planai in 1:05:01 minutes than last year’s Swiss winner Loic Meillard and 0.19 than the Norwegian Henrik Kristoffersen. Odermatt, who has been undefeated in seven World Cup giant slaloms, will attack for eleventh place, 0.98 seconds behind.

The Swiss high-flyer made a serious mistake halfway through. Feller, recently unhappy with fourth place in the Kitzbühel Slalom, has been foregoing special training for the giant slalom for some time due to physical reasons. In the core discipline this year he was no better than eleventh (season opener Val d’Isere). All five World Cup victories came in slalom.
“The Odi installed it cleverly”
“You could see that Odi installed it cleverly. I still wouldn’t say that I’m going all out to win in the second run, I’m just trying to show good skiing again. The setup felt very good,” said von Feller was surprised by his own performance. “I haven’t trained a single day in giant slalom since Alta Badia (December 17th/18th, note).”
“It’s a bit wet, a bit icy, a bit greasy. It’s certainly not easy to find the perfect setup,” said Odermatt on ORF. He nevertheless promised “full attack, as always.”
After 35 starters, the second best Austrian at the night spectacle was Raphael Haaser in tenth place (+0.93), Stefan Brennsteiner was in 14th place (+1.19). The decision will be broadcast from 8:45 p.m. (ORF 1).
