As reported, in the final development, a structurally separated cycle path will connect the main square with the harbor. The first stage up to the European School has already been implemented. The second, probably up to Nietzschestrasse, is scheduled to follow this year. But this one “Climate axis” is more than just a bike path.
More on the subject: Edible hedges and communal underground car parks – a changing alley
Citizens have their say
The city started a citizen participation process last year and is collecting small and large ideas on how this axis could be upgraded and redesigned in the interests of the residents. The ideas range from edible hedges to shared underground parking spaces, from benches to more trees. For example, a small animal habitat has already been implemented in the playground next to the European School. In the second phase, the implementation of the ideas will be discussed in workshops with the involvement of city experts. The first took place on January 12th in the parish of St. Severin and a lot could change there. The forecourt of the church could become a multifunctional area; other suggestions include a reduction in speed on Lederergasse, a safe pedestrian crossing or more green space.
Climate festival in front of the church
In order to test a possible new use, the second Climate Axis Festival (the premiere was in May 2023 on Herbert-Bayer-Platz) will take place on the side road in front of the church. Anyone interested in the workshops can find out more on project manager Hannah Kordes’ website studiokordial.de.
