Labor demand fell 16% in 2023

Labor demand fell 16% during 2023 in Uruguayafter some 65,812 employment opportunitiesmeaning some 12,642 fewer job opportunities than in 2022, the year in which historic figures were reached.

The data comes from the Annual Labor Market Report prepared by Advice Analytics, which contains the balance for 2023 and the trends for 2024.

According to the company, the preliminary numbers – which indicated a decrease of 18% – towards the end of last year could be interpreted as an “expected normalization” after what was a period of intense growth, such as 2022, and that in the Over the period, demand remained “extremely stable.” Finally, the decrease in labor demand was less than projected – 16% – and was also positioned above years prior to 2022.

According to the Advice report, “2023 was a year characterized by stability”. “Labor demand ended the year at values ​​very similar to those recorded at the beginning and no significant variations were observed. Even seasonal variations, which take place in specific months and are projected in advance, were moderate compared to previous years” , they expressed.

During the first quarter of last year, some 17,071 job opportunities were generated; in the second semester there were about 15,699; another 16,424 in the third quarter; while in December, the year closed with 16,624 employment opportunities during the fourth quarter. Likewise, between July and September was where the greatest difference was recorded compared to 2022, with 23.6% fewer job opportunities published.

Job trends in 2024

Advice Analytics states that more and more Uruguayan companies are turning to exploring “the potential advantages of using data”, in order to make strategic decisions and optimize processes.

From this, 17.1% of the ads employment demands some knowledge linked to data, implying growth of up to 2.5 times compared to 2019.

This knowledge is demanded by employers in various fields of application, such as business intelligence by 68.7%; software development and engineering by 47.6%; and personnel selection by 30.1%.

In turn, the use of applied technologies The most demands on the candidates were Excel, at 52%; SQL, by 33.7%; and the podium is completed by Python, at 17.2%.
