Apparently Saba I. is so seriously mentally ill that he cannot be found guilty in the criminal sense. According to the court report, the 42-year-old refugee from Iraq suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and is considered mentally incompetent.
Because it is feared that he could commit further serious crimes, he should be committed to a forensic therapeutic center for an indefinite period of time. This is essentially what the trial in the jury room of the Linz Regional Court is about, which begins today and is scheduled to continue next Tuesday and Thursday.

If the Linz gunman were guilty, he would have to answer for three counts of attempted murder, several death threats, one carjacking and four attempted robberies. In addition, there would be illegal possession of weapons.
As reported, according to the public prosecutor’s office, the man first tried to stab his wife in January of the previous year. He then fled in a car, allegedly trying to run over two police officers. An officer was seriously injured and the perpetrator stole a police assault rifle. He is said to have threatened several road users with the weapon and in three cases stole a getaway car. He ended up causing an accident and the 42-year-old was arrested.
