The rejection of the articles of the LUC, the flagship of the Government of Luis Lacalle Pou, will be voted in a plebiscite called for next March 27 after the Electoral Court validated the more than 730,000 signatures necessary to promote this instance.
The Electoral Court had announced that the “Yes” to repeal part of the law would carry a pink ballot and the government “No”, a light blue one.
Hours later, the National Commission for “Yes” announced that it will resort to the body to modify the decision because they understand that the color assigned to those who want to keep the items is part of the identity of all Uruguay.
The leader of the commission for “Yes” José Olivera said at a press conference that the definition of colors “is not a good sign for Uruguayan society and for our democracy” and stressed that the blue one should “be forbidden for either of the two options.”
Olivera regretted the “advantage” that is given “to an option that has opted for concealment” as the main element of the campaign.
In any case, he confirmed that for the Commission for the “Yes” it was a day “of celebration”.
The opposition Frente Amplio (FA, left) and social organizations presented in July of this year more than 730,000 signatures to promote this instance against 135 articles of the LUC, a roadmap of the right-wing ruling coalition that came into effect in June 2020.
The LUC was promulgated by the Executive Power on July 10, 2020 and constitutes one of the most important norms of the current administration of Lacalle Pou, who described it as “good, fair and popular.”
However, voices against the opposition were raised from the opposition and the FA warned that rights and freedoms were lost and that legislation was passed in favor of the most privileged.
Among the most questioned points are the flexibility of the use of police force, the regulation of the right to strike and the declaration of illegitimate people at the pickets. carried out in public or private spaces that “affect the free movement of people, goods or services”, with the consequent power to dissolve them.
Regarding the Penal Code, the LUC extends the minimum and maximum penalties for minors of imputable age, in addition to limiting the semi-release regime for adolescents.
