“Older people, small children, pregnant women and people with chronic illnesses can suffer particularly serious complications, but no one is immune from them. In the worst case, pneumonia, myocarditis and encephalitis can lead to death,” says Hans Jürgen Dornbusch, head of the vaccination commission of the Austrian Society for Pediatric and adolescent medicine (ÖGKJ). In the event of illness, children would excrete significantly more viruses for much longer than adults and could therefore easily infect them if they came into contact with grandparents. That’s why the expert recommends having children vaccinated against flu.

Many viral diseases
Diseases caused by RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) are also on the rise. Here too, babies and older adults are particularly at risk – and can be vaccinated. Whooping cough is also flaring up again in Europe and Austria. Infants under six months of age are most seriously ill. The dangerous respiratory disease is highly contagious. Basic immunization is planned for the first year of life. According to pediatrician Dornbusch, refreshers are necessary.
