ADX Energy, the company that wants to drill for natural gas in the Steyr Valley, announced on Thursday: The state’s nature conservation department had rejected all applications for a suspensive effect in connection with the complaints from Greenpeace, the environmental umbrella organization, the Austrian Nature Conservation Association and the Alpine Club against the nature conservation law decision. Once again, ADX now sees confirmation that the impact on the natural balance of the agricultural area and the nearby nature reserve is minimal, provided that the project is implemented in the winter months as announced.

Greenpeace gave a completely different assessment in a press release: The Upper Austrian nature conservation authority has completed the formal examination of the complaint against the gas drilling in Molln. The case is now before the State Administrative Court of Upper Austria.

While the verdict is still pending, construction work is already in full swing. “There are indications that ADX even violated the conditions of the drilling permit, which could result in criminal proceedings,” says the environmental protection organization.

Greenpeace sees inadequate legal protection in state law. This would allow corporations like ADX to destroy nature while a legally binding assessment of the situation is still pending. The environmental protection organization is calling for a quick court decision. “The black-blue state government is sacrificing our nature for economic profit interests. VP and FP are responsible for the fact that the nature conservation law in Upper Austria has glaring gaps and is thus opening the door to devastation.”
