Ebenseer nativity scene carver creates an ideal world of its own

The hobby carver Klaus Müllegger from Ebensee has been devoting his creativity to the natural material wood for 30 years. While carving was initially a leisure activity and an effective distraction from work-related stress, the work with the carving knife has become a real passion for the now 78-year-old Energie-AG retiree.

In the days from the first frost to Christmas, the most diverse nativity scenes are created in Müllegger’s carving workshop based on his self-made designs and drawings that he has collected throughout the year. Numerous large block nativity scenes such as the “Dreikönigkrippe” or the “Ebenseer Nativity” were created here and delighted visitors to the nativity scene exhibitions. Not least because of the corona pandemic, Müllegger devoted even more time to his favorite hobby this year and made a new relief crib.

“Carving shortens the waiting time for Christmas and is like an extended Advent calendar for me – from the first mist of autumn to the festival,” says Müllegger. “The atmosphere in the workshop is unique, strengthens and makes you creative. It fascinates me again and again to go along the way from the rough linden wood blocks to the expressive nativity scene figures. And the finished nativity scene reflects an ideal world without quarrels and arguments, without pandemics, without Lockdown, without division, without demos, without fear or illness. In the crib all people are happy. “

Klaus Müllegger’s nativity scenes can be viewed at Ebenseer Kripperlroas from Christmas to Candlemas (February 2nd) in his home at Strandbadstrasse 48. Please register in advance on Tel. 06133/7263.
