In the single-seater, the Tyrolean won on Friday in Germany ahead of local hero Max Langenhan and the Latvian Kristers Aparjods. In the doubles, Thomas Steu and Wolfgang Kindl won the silver medal despite a broken metatarsal bone, while the fastest qualifying riders, Juri Gatt and Riccardo Schöpf, celebrated bronze.
“Mega cool. The run was sensational, that’s why I’m overjoyed. Now I’ve been able to catch up, I was the only one in the team who wasn’t yet a sprint world champion. Mega,” said Gleirscher, 2018 single-seater Olympic champion in Pyeongchang, on ORF Interview. The other ÖRV aces narrowly missed the precious metal, Wolfgang Kindl came fifth, Nico Gleirscher sixth and European champion Jonas Müller seventh.
“Having your first medal is amazing”
This gave David Gleirscher a lot of self-confidence for the single-seater competition on Saturday, which was even more important in terms of value, as the 29-year-old emphasized. “To have a medal at the first World Cup is crazy,” said former world champion Kindl with joy. The Tyrolean injured his foot when he hit the finish line on Monday and has to fight through it in Germany. “I ignored the thing with the foot, but it’s coming along. There are good painkillers,” emphasized Kindl and laughed. “Silver is a good start, there’s a lot possible tomorrow.” The Latvian duo Martins Bots/Roberts Plume secured victory, Steu/Kindl were 0.032 seconds behind, Gatt/Schöpf were 0.110 seconds behind.
In the women’s sprint, the ailing Madeleine Egle in ninth place (+0.232 seconds), the fastest qualifying Lisa Schulte in tenth place (+0.244) and Hannah Prock (+0.251) in eleventh place clearly missed out on the medals in rainy conditions. “It didn’t quite fit together for us, there are races like that,” analyzed Egle. Local hero Julia Taubitz won the gold medal.
