Life goes on even with Corona

Even if there was a lockdown, the Steyr town hall wanted as much normality in the economy as was possible. Even next year, under difficult conditions, no compromises should be made on investments: “The city should be a reliable partner for the economy, especially at this time,” says Mayor Markus Vogl (SP). The other town hall factions largely agreed with this project, but occasionally unpleasant points were picked out of the draft budget.

Wolfgang Zöttl (FP) disapproved of the fact that the schools were skimpy on the budget and that the classes were still not equipped with electronic blackboards, so-called “whiteboards”. Vogl replied that the teachers did not want these teaching materials themselves, as he had heard during conversations. Zöttl also vehemently opposed the installation of sheet pile walls, which cost 950,000 euros and which “so-called experts” stipulated to remove the contaminated site of ancient heating oil, which had to be blocked from flowing into the Enns for a year and a half. Vogl Zöttl warned that such an environmental hazard cannot be dealt with carelessly.

VP city councilor Judith Ringer identified the road construction as the biggest omission in next year’s budget. “We are lagging so far behind with the renovation that I am ashamed of the condition of some roads,” she said. The Greens, on the other hand, refused to approve the traffic chapter, although it contained meaningful projects, noted Kurt Prack (G). But because 50,000 euros had again been reserved for the construction of the western clasp, the Greens were forced to refuse their approval again.
