China is also now putting pressure on Iran to curb attacks by the Houthi militia in the Red Sea. The regime in Beijing threatened that any disruption to its interests could have a direct impact on business relations with Tehran.

According to an insider, China is said to have said: “If our interests are violated in any way, it will affect our business with Tehran. So tell the Houthis to stand back.” Beijing is a major supplier to Iran’s missile and drone program and is also the largest buyer of Iranian oil.

China is massively affected economically

China had so far largely stayed out of the Red Sea crisis as the US and Britain launched air strikes against the Houthis. This is despite the fact that China is the hardest hit by the impact on global trade. China imports about half of its crude oil from the Middle East and more to the European Union than the United States. In particular, container prices for transport from China to Europe have increased massively in the last few weeks and are threatening to put a brake on the global economy.

The new Chinese impatience has a simple reason: From February 10th, Chinese companies will close for around four weeks in view of the New Year celebrations – so Beijing has a strong interest in ensuring that Chinese companies can still export their goods, especially to Europe.

Iran, in turn, counts the Houthis, along with Hamas in the Gaza Strip and Hezbollah in Lebanon, as part of its “axis of resistance” against Israel and the Gaza war.
