US discusses plans for contacts with Russia and NATO on security in Europe

The United States will hold talks with Russia and allies in the EU in the coming days on security issues in the region. This was announced on December 10 by a high-ranking official of the American administration.

“I think that in the next couple of days we will obviously continue to talk with our European partners, we will continue to talk with our Russian partners and look for ways to move forward,” the official said during a telephone briefing.

At the same time, he noted that one of the topics discussed will be the resolution of the crisis around Ukraine.

According to a spokesman for the American administration, we can talk about the already existing Russia-NATO Council format.

Earlier on Thursday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that the statements of US President Joe Biden about the meetings with Russia in Ukraine with the participation of NATO are unilateral statements.

The online summit of Putin and Biden via a secure video link was held on the evening of December 7. The presidents’ conversation lasted two hours.

Then the Deputy Press Secretary of the White House Karin Jean-Pierre said that the United States is working to resolve the situation around Russia and Ukraine through diplomatic means.

The deputy press secretary also added that the US authorities intend to announce high-level meetings with representatives of NATO countries and Russia to discuss its concerns about the expansion of the alliance.

In turn, the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov, in an interview with Izvestia, pointed out that after the talks there is no need to talk about a thaw in relations between Russia and the United States. At the same time, he noted that the leaders agreed to appoint trusted representatives for strategic security issues in Europe.
