As part of the extensive curriculum, graduates of “Home Economics” at ABZ Lambach also receive training to become “pedagogical assistants” (formerly kindergarten assistants), which allows them to work in kindergartens and other care facilities. Now it also serves as a springboard to elementary education: Starting in the fall, the Cross Sisters’ Training Institute for Elementary Education (BAfEP) will be offering an advanced course.
Graduates are elementary educators and can, for example, lead a group, but also work in an after-school care center or an early education facility. “Our students are well equipped thanks to the theoretical and, above all, practical training in the area of caring for small children,” says Karl Kronberger, director of the ABZ Lambach.
The admission requirement for the new advanced course in elementary education is a positive qualification from a technical school for teaching assistants – such as the one offered by the ABZ Lambach. There is also an aptitude test in advance. Over six semesters, the participants are trained to become elementary educators and graduate with a high school diploma.
BAfEP director Doris Mayer speaks of a successful offer: “The introduction of the advanced course in Upper Austria fills us with joy.” Heidemarie Schachner, specialist inspector of the agricultural school system, is also pleased: “Graduates in the field of home economics who are already teaching assistants will now have the opportunity to gain higher qualifications. This commitment will be doubly worthwhile for us as a society.” With the introduction of the advanced course, a long-held wish from the agricultural school system has been fulfilled, says the inspector.
