US President Joe Biden held a telephone conversation on Thursday, December 9 with the leaders of the Bucharest Nine. It was dedicated, as the American side announced, to his recent conversation with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin at the Russia-US summit. This was reported to reporters at the White House.
“The president’s call to the leaders of the Bucharest Nine group, represented by our allies from the eastern flank of NATO, lasted from 15:17 to 15:57 on the US east coast (23:17 – 23:57 Moscow time),” the Biden administration stressed.
The Bucharest Nine includes Bulgaria, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Romania, Czech Republic and Estonia.
On the same day, Joe Biden called the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky. Their conversation lasted, according to the White House, 1 hour 16 minutes – from 13:34 to 14:50 Washington time (21:34 – 22:50 Moscow time).
In particular, the head of the White House told his Ukrainian counterpart about his talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, said the head of the Ukrainian leader’s office, Andriy Yermak.
Joe Biden also said in a conversation with the Ukrainian leader that the decision to join NATO is a decision made exclusively by Ukraine and the alliance. In addition, the American head promised US assistance so that Ukraine could rebuff external aggression.
On December 7, Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks with the head of the White House. On the same day, it became known that Biden intends to hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky after a conversation with Putin.
The talks between the heads of the United States and the Russian Federation were held behind closed doors via a secure video link. Their conversation lasted two hours. The Kremlin said that the Russia-US summit was frank and businesslike.
During the conversation, Biden emphasized the allegedly “threatening” nature of the movements of Russian troops near the Ukrainian borders and outlined sanctions measures that the United States and its allies would be ready to apply in the event of further escalation of the situation. In response, Vladimir Putin noted that there is no need to shift the responsibility onto the shoulders of the Russian Federation, since it is NATO that is making dangerous attempts to conquer Ukrainian territory and is building up its military potential at the Russian borders.
