SP health spokesman Peter Binder warns against a further worsening of the shortage of doctors in view of the current figures that he had collected by the Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK). Accordingly, there are 290 statutory health insurance physicians working in Upper Austria who are 60 years old or older. It can be assumed that “around a quarter of the state’s statutory health insurance physicians will retire in the coming years,” says Binder. There are currently around 1,135 statutory health insurance physicians practicing in this country – with 1,166 available positions.

According to the ÖGK, new staff are constantly being filled: “Last year we signed 86 new doctors,” said spokeswoman Marie-Theres Egyed in response to an OÖN request. However, gaps remain. As of January 1st, there was “not a single statutory health insurance doctor in the field of gynecology and obstetrics” in the Freistadt district, according to the SP.

As reported, the ÖGK wants to create 100 additional cash register positions in Austria, of which 17 positions are planned for Upper Austria. In order to prevent doctors from having to work longer, better working conditions are needed for statutory health insurance doctors in private practice, for example relief from bureaucratic tasks. Binder also advocates rethinking the current regulations for medical entrance tests. His suggestion: Those applicants who do not pass the test should be recruited for other health professions.

At the same time, health workers should be “allowed to take on more tasks,” which in turn would relieve the burden on doctors, according to the Social Democrats. Binder also believes that patient guidance, which LH deputy Haberlander wants to push even more in the future, is urgently necessary. For example, patients should be “guided” via the health hotline 1450.
However, he complains that potential training positions have not been exploited in the past. “Compared to other federal states, the response here is too late.”
