There was a relatively great outcry when the Billa branch, the last grocery store, left Schärdingen’s city center in January 2023. Now, exactly one year later, a new – but not unknown in the Innviertel – local supplier is opening its doors in the former “Think!” business premises on Oberer Stadtplatz. The couple Michaela and Stefan Hennerbichler from Schärding have decided to enter into a franchise partnership with the organic self-service store “KOBL”.

The Neuhofen-based company opened its first location in Ried im Innkreis in October 2019. There are now seven shops across Austria that offer regional everyday products. Using a debit card, customers gain access to the store, where the products can be selected and paid for using the touchscreen cash register with a 3D scanner system. All products are pre-portioned and pre-packaged – and exclusively organic and from the region. The store is open seven days a week, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. The location in Schärding is scheduled to open in mid to late February.

“When we found out about the Billa closure, my wife and I wanted to do something,” says Stefan Hennerbichler in an OÖN interview. “I am a native of Enns and have experienced first hand what it means for a city center when the grocers move out of the center and the people there can no longer get the goods they need for their daily needs.” After constructive discussions with “KOBL” managing director Peter Gadermaier, the decision was finally made to implement the concept with a regional focus in Schärding.

Sufficient routine

An additional challenge for the Hennerbichler couple: While Stefan works as a self-employed carpenter, Michaela works for a regional company. You want to use the experience you have gained so far for your own benefit. “We are taking on the additional burden because we are convinced of the concept. I think that it fits Schärding well and that something like this is missing in the city,” says Michaela Hennerbichler. The couple are certain that the well-visited Schärdinger town square has enough potential for good business. “We’re not going to reinvent the wheel. But people in the Innviertel are now familiar with ‘KOBL’. In addition, we both bring enough business experience with us,” says Stefan. “It is very important to both of us to strengthen Schärdinger’s city center and the region.”
