The pilot project by Altstoff Recycling Austria (ARA) together with the Austrian Coffee and Tea Association and large coffee producers was successful: five million coffee capsules, 20 percent more than before, went into a recycling bin by the end of the year, ARA reported on Monday. Around 46 tons were collected in Upper Austria and another six tons in the Krems-Land and Schwechat districts. The capsules can be handed in at all waste collection centers and in Upper Austria also at Billa Plus. The collected containers are processed in a new recycling plant in Pettenbach (Kirchdorf district): the capsules are used again to produce pure aluminum or plastic for new products. The coffee grounds serve as organic fertilizer, oil binding agent or biogas. The campaign, supported by trade and industry, is the first project of its kind in Europe and marks a milestone for the circular economy even before the test phase is completed in March 2024.
Upper Austria’s Economics Councilor Markus Achleitner (ÖVP) thanked his compatriots who were “actively helping to shape the circular economy and climate protection”. ARA board spokesman Harald Hauke sees an important lever in raising awareness: “Packaging is our Austrian raw material of the future. With such innovative projects we are strengthening the population’s awareness of resources,” he praised the “significant increase in collection of over 20 percent.”
A competition will further fuel coffee consumers’ enthusiasm for collecting until the end of March.
