The first plus degrees of the past few days give hope for spring. In any case, preparations for the new season are already underway in the Obst-Hügel-Land Nature Park. The program is ready and offers more than 90 nature experiences for visitors young and old in the two nature park communities of St. Marienkirchen and Scharten. It starts at Candlemas on February 2nd with a guided herb hike and tree pruning courses in February and March.

Orchards as cultural heritage

Orchard cultivation in Austria was only recently recognized as an intangible cultural heritage. “This award is a huge deal and creates awareness for this cultural landscape that is worth protecting,” says nature park managing director Rainer Silber, who is also deputy. The chairman of the ARGE Streuobst is. In the nature park, professional arborists support farmers so that the trees in the orchards are preserved and cared for in the best possible way. “It wasn’t until autumn that there was another replanting campaign,” says Silber. One of the most successful programs in the nature park is the “Orchard Meadow Expedition” for students. A total of 1,293 people took part in the nature education programs last year, which is back to pre-Corona levels. Major events are also on the program again this year, such as the Schartner cherry blossom hike (April 14th, alternative date: April 21st) and the Weberbartl apple hike (October 13th).

Important focuses in the nature park are also the protection of animal and plant species and the survey of populations; this year there are focuses on bird protection (including little owls and hoopoes) and a survey on hoverflies, which are important pollinators. (krai)
