It’s been a long, long time since young people from Wels were able to learn to ski at the ski hill in Oberthan. In order to promote winter sports and bring people up the mountain who perhaps have little opportunity to do so for financial reasons, the city of Wels and the Hinterstoder Bergbahnen are now entering into a cooperation for the first time and are inviting people to a family snow spectacle on March 17th. The cost per family (mother and/or father plus a maximum of four children) is only 60 euros including lift tickets for everyone. For comparison: a day ticket for an adult currently costs 59 euros on the Höss.

“We are already doing a lot in common with the state of Upper Austria, what was missing so far was cooperation with cities, which we will look for more intensively,” says Rainer Rohregger, board director of Hinterstoder-Wurzeralm Bergbahnen. “If we can get just a few of the participants excited about skiing, our mission will be fulfilled,” says the ex-racer.

Special promotion for families with low incomes

The city of Wels is enabling an additional 100 families with low incomes – all those who recently received the rent and energy cost subsidy – to participate for just 20 euros. In addition to the lift tickets, this also includes the bus ride and a voucher per person for sausages and a drink in the Bärenhütte.

“We want to give families an affordable winter sports experience in the snow,” says social officer Christa Raggl-Mühlberger. There are also many activities off the piste, such as snowshoeing, archery or bobsleigh and rubber boating. Ski beginners are looked after on site by ski instructors who are supported by the Wels clubs TVN and Skiclub.

In order to attract more attention to the Welscup races and the Wels ski clubs, the next race date in the Welscup was chosen as the day of the event, says sports speaker Gerhard Kroiß. Both an adult and a children’s race will take place on March 17th. The giant slalom starts at 9:45 a.m.

Registration for the family snow spectacle is possible from Thursday, February 1st, at wels.at/schneespektakel.
