The summer season in Punta del Este is closing the month of January with a moderate movement, according to sources from the commercial sectors Ambit. Like what happened at the real estate level, in the gastronomic area the greatest commercial movement occurred between the last days of 2023 and the first days of the current year.

“After a very hard winter, particularly due to the low arrival of the Argentine public, we had a good influx of people between December 25 and January 10; now we are working mainly on weekends,” he said Sebastián Freire, president of the Punta del Este Gastronomic Corporation. “The lack of the Argentine middle class is noticeable, and a good number of Brazilians and people from outside the region were seen, but above all a good presence of Uruguayans,” he pointed out.

The situation of the sector does not escape other contexts already analyzed by representatives of real estate and hotel businesses of the main Uruguayan resort, who defined the 2024 season as “good” and with a significant presence of tourists with high purchasing power, which would had a positive impact on the increase in per capita spending. However, consulted by AmbitFreire responded that he had no elements to make that statement and that it would be “imprudent” to act on presumptions.

The importance of the sector and prospects

The head of the Gastronomic Corporation of Punta del Este valued that “the activity of a gastronomic establishment, as well as that of any other, must be seen in the total of the year and not only by number of people, but by level of expenditure and profit margin, these last two points are where “We have to pay more attention.”

“Gastronomy is a key activity of tourism and it has been growing, not only here, but in the world, as a pillar of tourism, it is important to live up to it and be aware of that responsibility. The options are varied, but Punta del Este cannot lose quality, which is a strength associated with the brand,” concluded Freire.

Regarding the medium-term perspectives, the representative of the business sector acknowledged that there will now be a decline in the tourist movement, which will be reactivated during Carnival week and Tourism Week.
