After one and a half years of intensive preparation, the deanery of Gallneukirchen was founded under canon law as the new parish “Mühlviertel-Mitte” on January 1, 2024. Bishop Manfred Scheuer celebrated the celebratory service for the inauguration of the pastor and parish council on Sunday in the Gallneukirchen parish church with around 500 believers. The parish is led from the shared parish office in Wartberg ob der Aist by Pastor Andreas Golatz in collaboration with pastoral director Bruno Fröhlich and administrative director Thomas Forster.

The new parish of Mühlviertel-Mitte consists of the twelve parishes of Alberndorf, Altenberg, Gallneukirchen, Hagenberg, Hellmonsödt, Katsdorf, Kirchschlag, Pregarten, Reichenau, Steyregg, Treffling and Wartberg ob der Aist. Representatives of all parishes were present at the inauguration ceremony, as were the district governors of Urfahr-Raum and Freistadt, Paul Gruber and Andrea Wildberger, as well as several mayors.

The new parish structure is intended to strengthen the cooperation between the new parish communities and to organize the assistance and leadership responsibility in various areas of responsibility of priests, permanent deacons, pastors as well as full-time and voluntary employees in such a way that the church is on site even in times remains possible due to the shortage of priests.

At the celebratory service, pastors and parish councilors promised Bishop Manfred Scheuer and the assembled community of their willingness to prudently lead the Mühlviertel-Mitte parish, to keep the basic principles of the church alive in it, to ensure that the good news of the Gospel is proclaimed in a timely manner and To place the poor and the oppressed at the center of the community.

“Brings love and joy to the region”

In his sermon, Bishop Scheuer asked the question: “What should we do in view of the social, ecclesiastical and cultural changes and developments in our country?” This is precisely why the Diocese of Linz initiated structural and parish reform. The mission of the church in Upper Austria is not just to focus on its own self-preservation. “What is the parish reform good for? Hopefully, so that more love and joy comes to the city of Gallneukirchen and the Mühlviertel-Mitte region.” The church does not need to reinvent itself, but it does have to respond to the challenges of the time so that the church can still be experienced locally. Addressing the pastor, the parish council and everyone else celebrating, Scheuer said: “Your mission is to look for the best for the people and to be a blessing.”

After his inauguration, Pastor Andreas Golatz said about the new parish of Mühlviertel-Mitte: “It is very important to me that we do not end anything that works, that is important to people and what they are committed to. What works in the parishes should continue . Where things are difficult or bumpy, we want to work together to make things better.”
