This year’s carnival season is a week shorter than last year – Ash Wednesday is already on February 14th. Four days beforehand, on Saturday, February 10th, the highlight of the foolish time in Linz will be the Pirate Ball. Up to 1,700 visitors are expected at the 65th edition of the masked ball in the Posthof – the last traditional costume ball in the state capital. There are eight bars and three live bands.
Maps only digitally
This year the Pirate Ball is again being organized by the even more traditional Ister rowing club, which, founded in 1876, will celebrate 150 years in two years. As every year, the facts are impressive: a core team of ten people organizes the ball and is supported by around 100 helpers from all age groups – all on a voluntary basis, of course, which, according to ball spokesman Berndt Papinski, is no longer a given today. Like every year, the Pirate Ball has been further developed this time too. Tickets are no longer available in print, but only digitally. For the first time there are also vegan dishes and a fourth competition category. As ball connoisseurs know, the most creative group, the weirdest individual costume and the largest group have received awards so far. This year, in response to a request from the audience, the most creative couple will be added. The awards go up at midnight and there are great prizes to be won. In addition to the volunteers, the party is also made possible by numerous partners and sponsors. The support ranges from donations of goods to discounted conditions when shopping.
Promoting young talent
As always, the proceeds go to the youth, specifically to the young people at the rowing club. The current Olympic qualification shows that the money is well invested, because this year there is an Austrian men’s eight that still has a chance of qualifying for Paris. Three of the rowers come from the Linz ball organizer Ister.
As always, there is a gift for the guests on the way home from the ball: the “devil’s scooter” for the hangover breakfast. But first you have to get your hands on tickets; according to reports there are still remaining stocks available.
