In the north of Ukraine, four people were killed in two villages in the Sumy region near the Russian border, the local administration of the Sumy region said on Tuesday night. In Avdiivka, eastern Ukraine, near the front line, a woman died, according to state radio station Suspilne. She was seriously injured in a shelling that afternoon.

Officials in the Sumy region reported daily attacks by Russian forces. The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces said that the Ukrainian armed forces repelled 13 Russian attacks in and around Avdiivka in the past 24 hours. Ukraine reported that Russia attacked with a total of 35 drones and two guided missiles, which were primarily aimed at energy and military facilities near the front and in other regions, the air force said.

The air defense destroyed 15 drones. For its part, Russian air defense said it had repelled Ukrainian drone attacks on the Crimean peninsula, which was annexed by Russia in 2014, and four other regions on Tuesday night. The Defense Ministry in Moscow said a total of 21 Ukrainian drones were shot down. In addition to Crimea, the Belgorod, Bryansk, Kaluga and Tula regions were also affected.

11 drones were intercepted over the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea alone. There was no information about damage or injuries.

Crimea in focus

This information could not be independently verified. In many cases it later turns out that the Ukrainian shelling has caused damage that is not officially reported. For the Russian army, Crimea is a staging area in the war of aggression against Ukraine. The supply of soldiers, weapons and ammunition runs across the peninsula. That is why Ukraine is trying to destroy Russian military targets in Crimea. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj wants to recapture the peninsula.

Russia has been waging a war of aggression against neighboring Ukraine for almost two years. In its defense against the Russian invasion, Ukraine repeatedly shells Russian territory – both in the border region and in the hinterland. However, the number of victims and damage are disproportionate to the serious consequences of the war in Ukraine.
