2.3 kilometers, a good 300 meters in altitude: It was a leisurely hike that a couple from Hungary wanted to undertake with their nine-year-old son on Sunday afternoon. Nevertheless, the trip ended with a police operation. The family set off from Hochserner Hof around midday towards Kolomanskirche, which is located near the summit of the mountain of the same name at around 1,100 meters above sea level.

Trees blocked the path

But the path through the forest turned out to be more difficult than expected: uprooted and broken trees blocked the route, causing the family to lose orientation in the terrain. As darkness fell, the hikers told a friend that they no longer knew where they were and sent them the GPS coordinates. The family friend alerted the police in Mondsee.

“Not equipped for cold temperatures”

“The family was not equipped for cold temperatures, did not have a headlamp with them and the cell phone battery was running low,” said the emergency services. They found the slightly hypothermic hikers after a short search and brought them safely back to the starting point of their hike.
