This is shown by a current survey by the Salzburg Chamber of Labor. The prices were examined in 192 ski huts in 23 ski areas in the state. The increase compared to 2014 was particularly high for ski water and apple strudel. And it turns out: the bigger the ski area, the higher the prices.
“Prices have risen excessively”
“If you look at the results of our last gastronomy survey, it is clear that ski hut prices have risen excessively,” explained AK consumer advocate Christian Obermoser in a press release. Between September 2013 and 2023, prices in the catering industry rose by just over 49.2 percent; the consumer price index (CPI) “only” increased by 33.5 percent in almost the same period. In the ski hut survey, the price increase was an average of 59.2 percent compared to the last survey in 2014.

Apple strudel became 75 percent more expensive
For the study, the AK collected the prices for two dozen dishes and drinks (including five products specifically for children). The strong inflation was caused less by beer, cola, etc. – on average, the prices of drinks increased by 49 percent – but by the food. Prices here have risen by more than 63 percent since 2014. For apple strudel it was an average of 75 percent, for spaghetti Bolognese 69 percent and for Frankfurter with pastries 70 percent. Incidentally, the “frontrunner” among drinks was ski water, which is particularly popular with children, with an increase of 72 percent (0.25 liters) and 53 percent (0.5 liters).
The larger the ski area, the higher the prices
In the district comparison, Tennengau, Lungau and Pongau were below, while Pinzgau was above the national average. In principle: “The greater the number of kilometers of slopes on offer, the higher the prices for a stop.” The AK Salzburg uses a few examples to show how high the price differences can be: In a company in Obertauern, a “pint” (0.4 liter) of beer costs 6.80 euros. Extrapolated to “half” that would be 8.50 euros. In Werdenweng, 0.5 liters of beer charge 4.50 euros.

6.13 euros for a ski water
The price record for 0.4 liters of ski water was also recorded in Obertauern: 4.90 euros extrapolated to 0.5 liters 6.13 euros. In Werdenweng, however, half a liter is available for 3 euros. Spaghetti Bolognese costs 8.90 euros in Saalbach-Fieberbrunn, but 18 euros in a hut in nearby Leogang. Frankfurt sausages with pastries were available in Mühlbach for 4.50 euros, while in a place in Saalbach they charged 9.60 euros. Incidentally, around a third of the ski huts had a price stated for tap water: on average, 0.25 liters of water cost 1.06 euros.
However, the high prices are unlikely to deter ski fans: winter tourism in the state is currently on a record course, and for many holidaymakers and day visitors, stopping off is likely to still be part of the skiing experience.
