It was the biggest success so far in Carina Schwarzbauer’s young career:
The 15-year-old was crowned Austrian U18 judo champion on Saturday in Bischofshofen. After a bye and two preliminary round victories, Schwarzbauer faced a fighter she knew very well in the final of the class up to 57 kilograms: her best friend Katharina Mikota.

The Oberkappler not only trains with her in the UJZ Mühlviertel club, but also in the Linz competitive sports BORG. “We decided beforehand that no matter how the final turns out, we would both be happy about it,” said Schwarzbauer. That’s how it was: After Schwarzbauer got the better end, Mikota was the first to congratulate.
An outcome that not everyone expected, also because Schwarzbauer only recently started training again. After dislocating her shoulder several times, she underwent surgery in August. “I didn’t expect that I would be able to fight again so quickly,” said Schwarzbauer, who made her fight comeback just two weeks ago. The current title makes up for the effort.
Mühlviertel was the best club
On the championship weekend – the day after, Schwarzbauer was third on the podium in the U23 category – with a total of 14 medals (4x gold, 3x silver, 7x bronze), their club was named the most successful club in Austria. Lena Mayrhofer from St. Martin, Claire Pröll from Helfenberger and Lisa Peherstorfer from Niederwaldkirchen also received championship honors. On both days of the competition, Upper Austria won the federal state medal table ahead of Vienna.
