New party in Bulgaria reaches coalition agreement

“The agreement has just been signed by all of our coalition partners,” said PP co-chair, Kiril Petkov, on public radio on Friday. The agreement ended a month-long political crisis with three parliamentary elections without a clear result.

In mid-November, the PP surprisingly emerged from the third election within six months as the strongest force. The conservative GERB party of long-time head of government Boiko Borissow had to line up behind them. Petkow had only founded the PP together with Assen Wassilew in September.

Borissov is accused of corruption, among other things. In the first election in April of this year, GERB suffered great losses. However, it remained the strongest force and at the same time found no coalition partners in the heavily fragmented Bulgarian parliament.

The two Harvard graduates Petkov and Wassilew began after the election in November negotiations with a right-wing coalition, the Socialists and the protest party of the singer Slawi Trifonov. The cabinet of the new government will be announced on Saturday. On Monday, the corresponding adjustment is recognized in Parliament. The 41-year-old businessman Petkov now considered the favorite for the post of prime minister.
