Melanie Resch and her team hardly notice the pre-Christmas calm. For seven years, the Nettingsdorf native and her colleagues in the Allhaming mail distribution center have been going through the most stressful weeks of the year before December 24th. “The lockdown made the situation even worse,” emphasizes the 33-year-old. Because of the store closings, many people get their Christmas gifts online, and online trading is booming.
The logistics center was originally designed for 120,000 shipments per day, but the number has steadily increased over the years: Shortly before Christmas, over 200,000 parcels will be in circulation every day. For Andrea Pilz-Kapfinger, head of the Upper Austrian logistics centers, good planning is a basic requirement: “We are already preparing in the summer months to manage the Christmas season well”. In order to be able to cope with the enormous quantities, the number of employees will be increased around the Advent season.
