Tikhanovskaya complained about weak support from the West

In most cases, countries, including European ones, only condemn the Belarusian authorities and express concern, but there are no serious consequences for Minsk. This was stated on December 10 by the leader of the Belarusian opposition Svetlana Tikhanovskaya.

“I’m confused, I don’t understand what the difference is between ‘very deeply and deeply concerned’ and ‘deeply, extremely seriously concerned,’” she said at the US-sponsored Summit for Democracy.

Tikhanovskaya noted that during a meeting with the foreign minister of one of the states, he told her: “We did everything we could, and nothing worked.” According to the leader of the opposition in Belarus, there was irritation and fatigue in the voice of her interlocutor.

“We rely on your help, but also on your consistency,” she said.

After the presidential elections in Belarus on August 9, 2020, in which Alexander Lukashenko won for the sixth time with 80.1% of the vote, massive opposition rallies began in the country. The results of the vote were not recognized by the US and EU countries. Tikhanovskaya, who was one of the presidential candidates, also disagreed with the election results, called on the world community to support the demonstrators and left the country.

In December 2020, the Prosecutor General’s Office of Belarus opened criminal cases against members of the opposition, including Tikhanovskaya, on the facts of creating and leading an extremist group, financing its activities in order to seize state power in an unconstitutional way. Later, a new criminal case was opened against Tikhanovskaya and another fugitive oppositionist Pavel Latushko. They were accused of “unauthorized assignment of the title or power of an official.”
